Science specialist teacher Kerry McCarthy, along with Nadine Frankel, deliver a program which focuses on the environment and sustainability.
“It was a very pleasant surprise to win the award,” she said. “This is our fifth year working with Zoos Victoria. We started with the Seal the Loop program about marine life entanglement. It’s about keeping rubbish out of the water. We also monitor the beach between the Flume and Surf Club. We collect and count how much rubbish there isand that data is sent off and collated.”
Community clean-up days have been held at Warrnambool’s main beach and the school established public bins for fishing line and other items at Proudfoots Boathouse and on the Hopkins River bridge.
“Jimmy our gardener goes and collects the rubbish about once a month,” Mrs McCarthy said. A fundraising day was also held, with pupils wearing orange in support of orangutans.
