A woman in her sixties has been flown to hospital in a serious condition after a two-car collision at Illowa in which seven other people were also hospitalised.
Sergeant Pat Day, of Koroit police, said a family of six from China travelling north on Southern Cross Road collided with a Portland couple travelling south near the intersection of Tower Hill Road.
The grandmother from the Chinese family suffered chest, abdominal and minor head injuries and was flown to Melbourne’s Alfred hospital while a baby from the family received minor injuries. The baby’s mother suffered a broken collar bone while the driver suffered chest pain.
Sergeant Day said the vehicle carrying the family collided with a red utility carrying two people from Portland who were travelling south on Southern Cross Road after one of the vehicles tried to turn right into Tower Hill Road.
A man in the utility suffered back pain while a woman in the vehicle suffered shock.
The utility came to rest against the front of another utility waiting at the intersection but the male driver of that vehicle was uninjured.
The accident happened shortly before 1.40pm on Monday.
Both the Tower Hill and Southern Cross roads were closed for several hours after the collision.
Sergeant Day said the Major Collision Investigation Unit was called to the scene because of the severity of the injuries suffered by the grandmother.
Late Monday evening a spokeswoman from the Alfred Hospital said the woman was in a serious but stable condition.
