Ms Britnell said the draft, which proposes new minimum requirements for housing, exercise and mental stimulation was an “overreach” and could put south-west trainers out of business.

It comes as Warrnambool gears up to host an invite-only forum as the Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association seeks feedback on the draft next Tuesday.

But the state government is adamant the draft is currently just a consultation with owners, trainers and breeders about improving animal welfare.

Ms Britnell said greyhound racing was an important part of the “social fabric” in the Warrnambool region.

“Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club has a long and strong history in this area and is an important part of our social fabric, as well as being a strong economic contributor,” she said.

"The future of this club and those who are involved with it and enjoy a night out at the greyhounds should not be threatened by the current over regulation being proposed by Daniel Andrews.”

However, agriculture minster Jaala Pulford said the draft was in place to ensure the industry remained sustainable into the future.

“We want to make sure people’s views are heard, the industry code is strong and greyhound racing has a sustainable future where dog welfare is a priority,” she said.

“We know Victorians take animal welfare seriously, and so does this government.”

Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club general manager Craig Monigatti said the Warrnambool forum was an information session on the proposal.

He said between 15 and 20 people from the south-west had been invited to attend.

“It’s an information session which gives participants a chance to have a say about what is good and bad about the draft,” he said.
