The council backed the Lake Bullen Merri management plan which will help inform future council decisions.
Camperdown resident Philip Russell said the lake was possibly the jewel in the town.
“The closure of Lake Bullen Merri continues to disappoint me and everyone I speak to,” he said. He said the overall community desire was for greater access to the lake and shoreline.
Cr Gstrein said the plan wasn’t a magic wand which would fix all the issues at Lake Bullen Merri but she would like to see access improved for fishing, bike riding and walking. “Having that road open is one of my priorities for the next four years,” she said.
“I never say never. I think it’s important that we sit down with them (the landholders) and have a conversation with them and find out if they have any appetite whatsoever to look at reopening that road.”
Director of Sustainable Development Ian Gibb said the plan had been lead by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and he understood there was a significant concern around the question of shoreline access. He said the road around the lake was on private land and there needed to be ongoing dialogue with the land owners.
