Mayor Jim Doukas attended a school assembly on June 16 where he presented the environmental award. The award introduced last year, recognises excellence by environmental sustainability champions.
Cr Doukas said the school were worthy winners and the award celebrated their waste and energy reduction results.
He said students had worked to educate their peers and families about sustainable living practices. “This has led to a noticeable fall in waste to landfill and hundreds of people being more aware of the correct use of council’s kerbside waste collection system,” Cr Doukas said.
He said students had also worked to “greatly improve” local biodiversity through the planting of native vegetation within the school grounds and several local sites.
“Council is fortunate to have a number of passionate and dedicated organisations, community groups and individuals that contribute countless hours of their time towards making the municipality more environmentally sustainable.”
