Detective Senior Constable Mick Palmer, of the Colac police crime investigation unit, said the accident happened at Castle Cove, near Glenaire and south of Lavers Hill.
Police had earlier attempted to intercept the vehicle in Apollo Bay and speak to the driver, a 20-year-old South Australian from Millicent.
He was driving a blue Mazda sportscar and identified as a possible missing person.
The vehicle was later found crashed and the driver located in a nearby paddock with severe burns to his body.
He was taken to Melbourne's The Alfred Hospital with severe injuries.
On Wednesday he was reported to be in an induced coma and a critical condition.
Detective Senior Constable Palmer requested that anyone who saw a Blue Mazda MX6 with South Australia registration plates driving along the Great Ocean Road to contact the Colac police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
He said police were trying to gather information about the man’s whereabouts prior to the accident.
