Portland police Sergeant Daniel Lehmann said there was a single vehicle accident reported to police at 11.38pm Tuesday when a car crashed into a timber fence in Wyatt Street.
"A neighbour contacted police and at 11.55pm a suspect vehicle was spotted by patrolling officers with a paling embedded in the front of the car," he said.
"The officers thought there may have been a link,” he said.
Sergeant Lehmann said a 48-year-old Portland driver was intercepted by officers and later recorded an evidentiary alcohol breath test of .145.
"The driver was arrested, interviewed and will be charged on summons with driving offences expected to include drink driving, careless driving and fleeing the scene of the accident," he said.
There was significant damage to the fence, the car was still driveable and the driver's licence was immediately suspended.
The driver is known to police and he will appear in the Portland Magistrates Court at a date to be scheduled.
"It's good to get another drink driver off the road," Sergeant Lehmann said
