Brett Raymond O'Neil, 38, of ​Gunner Street, unsuccessfully applied for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody until July 10.

Police said that at 1.30am on June 11 Mr O'Neil​ ​and a woman were in Camperdown and went to a Brooke Street address with the intention of stealing a car.

The woman went inside a vulnerable man's house, had a conversation with him and stole his wallet, keys and a mobile phone.

The victim challenged the woman and she returned his wallet but she denied she had his keys.

She left but the victim was suspicious about the keys.

​A few minutes later the victim heard the distinctive sound of his car being unlocked and went outside to see the woman and Mr O'Neil​ ​near his car.

He challenged them ​and they ran off. 

The missing keys included a car key, two house keys, four Yale lock keys and a distinctive lanyard.

The woman was charged 11 days later with offences.

On Monday police executed a warrant at Mr O'Neil​'s home and located some of the stolen keys.

Officers also found two stolen sets of binoculars, a large tool kit, a street sign and six .22 ammunition rounds.

Mr O'Neil​ ​was arrested and charged with seven dishonesty offences including burglary, theft, attempted theft of a car and handling stolen goods.

Investigating officer Senior Constable Andrew Kirkpatrick opposed bail saying Mr O'Neil​ ​was an unacceptable risk of continuing to offend and had prior offences of failing to answer bail.

Mr O'Neil​ ​told the hearing he was the victim of a witch hunt, had only been recently released from jail and was willing to report to police daily while on bail.

Magistrate Cynthia Toose denied bail saying it was a pretty strong police case.

She said the victim was a vulnerable person and the stolen lanyard was found hanging above Mr O'Neil​ 's bed.

The magistrate said Mr O'Neil​ ​had 21 pages of prior convictions and the new charges were concerning.
