Tripadvisor’s Warrnambool restaurants page lists ‘Bunnings Restaurant’ as the eighth most popular eating establishment in the city.
The page, which rates a simple sausage in white bread and served with sauce, has attracted 57 reviews in the past two weeks with 93 per cent rating it as excellent.
One Tripadvisor reviewer said the experience evoked nostalgic childhood moments of a time when a sausage in bread was a treat at primary school and junior sporting events.
“This place brought me right back (to childhood). Reasonably priced and delivered on taste. Straight forward and well delivered. Not trying to be fancy. Nothing pretentious here. Just good sausage, masterpiece sauce. Onion and white bread. Put that in ya gob.”
One reviewer said she drove from Geelong after hearing the positive customer reviews.
“Hands down beats any Michelin star restaurant. The snag, the sauce, the bread, the onion, all drool worthy,” Chelsea Jukich said.
Another said it was the best sausages she’s ever had. “Cooked to perfection, the bread was fresh and the tomato sauce just made it. Couldn't recommend this place enough!”
“I honestly never imagined a simple onion could be transformed the way they were,” Morris W said. “Amazing. And the snags! Pure brown Coles magic! No snag I ever have is going to compare to that magical snag. 10/10 would eat again.”
Respondents said they had celebrated wedding anniversaries and birthday lunches at the Warrnambool site.
Grace said there was a great atmosphere, friendly staff and amazing food. “It's a meal and show as the food is cooked right in front of you,” Grace said. “Simply amazing, will be heading back next weekend and every weekend after!!”
While some reviewers called for more vegan options and others said there was a lack of gluten-free menu choices, the responses were overwhelmingly positive.
The weekend sausage sizzles, held outside Bunning Warehouse hardware and garden stores, are hosted by various local charity groups, clubs and schools to raise funds.
