Nathan Strample, 27, of Naroghid School Road, Naroghid, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to cultivating and using cannabis.
He was convicted and fined $1500, which he will pay off at $50 a month.
Police said that on March 4 officers executed a warrant at Strample's home.
They found three small bags of cannabis, six plants, one plant drying and two bags of waste cannabis from plants.
Solicitor Jack Rabl said his client had been growing the drugs for his own use and there was no evidence of trafficking.
He said Strample had self-diagnosed anxiety and depression and was medicating those conditions with cannabis.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose said if Strample had anxiety and depression those conditions would be worsened by using cannabis.
She said cannabis was an insidious drug which had significant negative mental health impacts on users.
"Cannabis use may very well be exacerbating your condition," she said.
