Portland police Senior Constable Tim Gillahan said the red Honda 2KVA generator was removed from a storage facility on Boyers Lane between 3.30pm Saturday and noon Sunday.
He said Portland police also had a life jacket which has been handed in.
The life jacket is from the Port Princess which sunk near Port MacDonnell on May 16 while travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne.
The life jacket was found at Point Danger on Sunday.
In other police news, Portland detectives have now charged two Ballarat district men in relation to an alleged armed robbery at Heywood early last week.
A 29-year-old Creswick man was remanded in custody on carjacking charges while a 46-year-old was charged with armed robbery and released on bail.
A warrant has been issued for another Ballarat man - Scott Coleman.
