Detective Sergeant Jason von Tunk, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, said police officers were called after a shooting incident late last week.
He said an incident happened at Sandy Waterhole Road near Dartmoor and police were called at 7.30pm last Thursday.
A 61-year-old Mount Gambier man contacted police.
Officers went to Uphill's Road where they found a man with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, believed to be caused by a .22 calibre bullet.
An ambulance was called and the man transported to the Mount Gambier Base Hospital, with a significant but not life-threatening injury.
"The injured man was driving a white Toyota Hiace van. That vehicle has been seized by police and will be forensically examined by crime scene officers," Detective Sergeant von Tunk said.
"We are currently pursuing a number of avenues of investigation and the man remains in hospital. Anyone with information about the injured man or his van is requested to contact the Portland police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
