On show at the Warrnambool Coin, Banknote, Stamp, Trading Cards and Toy Fair was a silver medal with links to Portland which is expected to fetch $15,000 when it goes to auction in Melbourne next month.
Numismatic Association of Victoria president Darren Burgess said the medal was presented to William King who helped rescue 24 survivors from the Ardmella shipwreck south-west of Mount Gambier in 1859. The Portland steamer, Ladybird, was one of the vessels involved in the dramatic rescue.
Melbourne bank note dealer Marcus Condello had a rare $20 note which, despite it being slightly damaged, was worth $1500. However, he said one in mint condition would be worth $10,000.
Football collector David Devine, of Melbourne, had Scanlan football card wrappers from the 1970s worth $300 while the card itself was only worth $10.
