Seagulls captain Dan Nicholson led the way with an incredible seven goals from the midfield in Saturday’s 27.20 (182) to 6.6 (42) thumping of Hamilton Kangaroos at Melville Oval.
Matt Sully is continuing to thrive in his new role playing predominantly forward, booting six goals – most coming as the Seagulls piled on 10 goals to one in the first term – while Sam Rudolph was an impassable wall in defence.
“We were probably just too big-bodied,” Evans said. “They’re a very young side.
“I was rapt with the way our guys played four quarters.
“A lot of scoring shots in the last quarter showed we’re not just being happy and complacent.”
Hamilton Kangaroos coach Matt Dunn said the Seagulls’ “top-end talent” was simply too strong, but there were positives his team would take from the contest.
“That was the major difference – blokes like Nicholson, (Jackson) Hollmer, Sully and Rudolph,” he said.
“We do takes positives out of it: the boys never gave in and just continued to work hard.”
Dunn noted the side’s younger players were rising to the challenge, with the Kangaroos’ best on the day all 21 years of age or younger.
