The Bombers were without regular goaler Molly Hutt (illness) in Saturday’s 38-23 win over Portland at Cobden Recreation Reserve, but the combination of Jessica Wheadon and Alicia Blain in goals proved strong.
Wheadon finished with 31 goals and Blain seven, while Chloe Gibson also found her way on court in the fourth quarter and gave a good account of herself at wing defence.
The Bombers overcame a slow start to work to led by three goals at the first break, seven at the second and 15 at the last, holding on to win by the same margin.
“I think about 10 minutes in we just started to focus on what we wanted to achieve,” Cobden coach Nadine McNamara said. “(Wheadon and Blain) did really, really well, considering they hadn’t played a lot of netball together. Lisa Gardiner was fantastic at wing attack, she provided a lot of drive.”
