In a three-way partnership with Warrnambool City Council, Deakin has signed a memorandum of understanding with Jilin University, which is in Warrnambool’s sister city Changchun.
Mayor Kylie Gaston is in China to welcome the deal.
“Thanks to our sister city relationship, Deakin Warrnambool has had really good access to universities in Changchun,” she said.
“We will also be announcing scholarships between Deakin and Changchun.”
She said 12 Chinese students would be attending Deakin next year.
“That looks like it will dramatically increase after the first intake as well,” Cr Gaston said.
Jilin University is a research university under the direct jurisdiction of China's Ministry of Education.
“It is a top-tier university,” Cr Gaston said.
Cr Gaston has taken gifts to China from Woodford Primary School and will give them to Woodford’s sister school.
She returns to the south-west on Friday.
In January the council launched the Warrnambool-China Bureau, which provides advice and practical assistance, including language translation, cultural and commercial awareness, presentations, due diligence and help in organising visits to China. It aims to bridge the gap between Warrnambool and Chinese business opportunities.
