Pretty trees pose question
Maybe councillors Tony Herbert and Peter Hulin should have been more concerned about the "mess" under the trees in Lutana Grove, instead of looking up at the "Beauty of Foliage" (The Standard, June 20). Who will be responsible for the cleaning up on the Liebig Street footpaths when this type of tree is planted in the CBD – council or the few shopkeepers left after the 'revitalisation'?

Support for surcharges
Re Vicki Walter’s letter (Businesses Bite Hands That Feed Them, The Standard, June 17) about businesses charging surcharges on public holidays. Who is feeding who? Try doing some research before unleashing such ill informed vitriol on the business owners.
I took the time to read an accountant’s submission on the effects of penalty rates in the catering industry.
Owners are struggling to make anything out of opening on public holidays. Their staff do. If you are happy with their staff to get penalty rates then you should be happy to pay for them. It’s as simple as that.
If you hold businesses in such contempt for trying to recover their costs go to Maccas.
They have their own enterprise agreement. Lay off the businesses, be thankful they open at all on public holidays. We don't have any connection with any business but think your post was grossly ill informed and unfair.

Help out businesses
Those poor Warrnambool city centre shop owners. It’s easy to say that the shop fronts have remained open during the present renovations but let’s be honest it’s not driver friendly down there at the moment.
In a world where people won’t walk the length of themselves it is not looking good for business.
I appreciate this was essential renovations and that the current council are not responsible for the way the road is closed and infrastructure revamped but surely something could have been done to help the poor shop owners.
How about opening all the back of the shops for business and re routing the traffic through the car parks on a one way temporary basis at a reduced speed just for the time being? That would allow the whole of Liebig Street to be worked on at the same time and completed at the same time.
I am pretty sure some of the parking at the back of the shops that are under street renovation is free at the moment. Perhaps at the moment it’s time to make all parking free for shoppers until this mess is cleaned up.
This is by no means a slight on council, just my heart goes out to those poor shop owners who must be losing business hand over fist.
Please people, if you can use those shops in the city centre do so. They have been there for us over the years so please don’t dessert them when they need us.

Back racing industry
I am writing this letter in support of beach training of racehorses in and around Warrnambool.
We, as residents of Warrnambool, have the unique distinction of "the best place in the world to train staying horses" (Gai Waterhouse).
We have the honour of a Melbourne Cup Winner, how ironic, with a movie in production of the triumph.
The best trainers in the land have operations here employing a significant large workforce with families. Also, a huge servicing industry with riders, jockeys, stablehands, feed, farriers, vets, the list goes on and on.
The May Racing Carnival has legendary status in Australia and abroad and attracts thousands of people to Warrnambool with significant financial gains for the city. With the new world of "e commerce" jobs will be a premium and as a community we must protect our jobs for our children.
