Mr Purcell’s vote is likely to be crucial in passing the bill through parliament’s upper house, and he has said he would not support the Fire Services Legislation Amendment (Reform) Bill 2017 in its current form.
The bill passed the lower house on Thursday unchanged, and is set to be debated in the upper house within the fortnight.
Mr Purcell put a call out on social media and his website inviting CFA volunteers to get involved, with the first meeting scheduled for Friday June 9 in Portland.
“I am James Purcell, your member of parliament, and it's my vote that will most likely decide whether the proposed changes to the CFA become law,” the MP wrote. Meetings will be in Heywood this Sunday, Macarthur on Monday, Port Fairy on Tuesday, Purnim on Wednesday, Koroit on Thursday and Hawkesdale next Friday.
