Members of the friends of the rail trail group have this week secured the western end of the building.
The next step in the process is to get funding to fix the roof to ensure the building is weatherproof.
Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail committee of management secretary Ian Bodycoat said fixing the roof was vital to the future of the century-old building.
“We don’t want it to disintegrate like the one at Illowa and we don’t want it sitting there and not being used,” Mr Bodycoat said.
“The floor is in good condition but we need a new roof to keep out the weather so it doesn’t deteriorate.
“The shed is now at lockable stage and we hope to be able to offer it as a storage space for groups in the community to use. It’s a great space.”
