Buchanan was named in the Australian team on Monday to compete at the world championships in the USA in July.

The two-time Olympian has three BMX world titles and four mountain bike ones on her resume, but her task of adding another has been made slightly harder with the omission of the time-trial event from this year's worlds in Rock Hill.

She saluted in it last year and claimed silver in the race, which will now become her focus.

The 26-year-old will ride in two Crankworx events, in France and Austria, before joining the Aussie team in South Carolina for the worlds.

She's ridden the Rock Hill track a few times before, giving her a head start in her preparations for the worlds.

"I've lost count of how many times it's been now," Buchanan said.

"It's obviously a shame [they're not doing the time trial category anymore], but now we've got that one opportunity to win the rainbow world championships stripes.

"That's pretty prestigious and after winning seven world titles I'm hoping this will be my eighth world title and to be able to run the rainbow and fly the Australian flag for a year would be a great outcome."

After missing out on a medal at last year's Olympic Games in Brazil, Buchanan has looked to push herself to ensure her riding goes to the next level as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics start to loom on the horizon.

She crashed out in the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro and also missed the podium in the final in London four years earlier.

Buchanan's made an effort to not only make herself a better rider, but also change things up to ensure she remains mentally fresh.

That's included tackling the Nitro Circus mega ramp - a 12-metre monster she became just the second woman to take on - in the lead-up to winning her 17th Aussie title.

"I didn't get the result at Olympics so ... I wanted to push my progression this year. I have quite a diverse calendar with BMX and mountain biking," Buchanan said

"Probably my biggest gains is handling fear, conquering new jumps like the Nitro Circus ramp and just pushing my progression on two wheels.

"I'm coming into the world championships with my skill set higher and also what's been nice about it is [to be] mentally fresh.

"As an athlete if you eat, train, sleep the exact same sport for 12 years it can get a little bit repetitive. I'm definitely coming in a lot fresher and with a new bag of tricks."

Colombia's reigning world champ Mariana Pajon will be in Rock Hill to defend her title, while Buchanan was expecting the local women to also be strong.

"[Pajon] will be there and the American girls will be tough on home soil and one of the Dutch girls is going really well at the moment," she said.

"It'll be a stacked world championship final, but I look forward to flying home to Canberra airport and hopefully having eight world titles."
