The reigning premier posted its first win of the season, defeating 2016 grand final opponent Camperdown 50-45 at Leura Oval on Saturday, while the division one team fell just two goals short of its fourth win for the year.
Division one coach Rhiannon Cuomo, who has also played three games for the open side so far, said the breakthrough senior win was a relief to the Seagulls.
“It was probably a lot of ‘own’ pressure put on the girls by themselves,” she said. “And obviously to get that first win on the board was a bit of a relief.
“This week, we’ve actually really settled the sides between open and division one.
“You could see the girls were a lot more settled on the court.”
Cuomo said while there was still some room for movement between the teams, which had been operating more as a squad earlier in the season, the coaches now had the lists “about 90 per cent” locked in.
She also highlighted some specific drills that open coach Megan Titmus had been running at training in recent weeks which directly fed into improved games on the weekend, as well as the return of powerful goaler Carley Thomas the past two weeks. Thomas shot 31 goals, teaming well with regular partner-in-crime Emily Forrest, who dropped in 19.
The Seagulls take on South Warrnambool at Gardens Oval this Saturday.
