Nixon and Warwick Capper will speak at Dennington Football Netball Club on Saturday for a sportsman’s night.
Former West Coast Eagles premiership player Daniel Kerr was to play for Dennington on Saturday and participate in the night’s entertainment but has pulled out due to injury.
Nixon, who pleaded guilty in 2013 to assaulting his ex fiance, said he’d spoken at 150 gigs around Australia and had helped raise $1.1 million for charity.
He said people shouldn’t judge him by what had been in the media and there were things he’d done which he regretted but he “owned his mistakes” and gotten on with his life. “Yes there’s things which I regret in life,” he said.
“But I don’t spend time going back over it. I’m not a negative person, I’m a positive person.”
In 2011 it was alleged Nixon had an inappropriate relationship with a teenage girl.
Nixon will play for the Dennington reserves on Saturday and said his talk would include the support he’s had from his wife and children.
Dennington Football Netball Club president Clinton Hall said Kerr was the initial draw card for the club and planning for the night had been under way for months.
Mr Hall said it was hoped the controversy surrounding Nixon would bring people to the event. He said it was becoming increasingly difficult for small clubs to fund-raise and clubs relied heavily on sponsorship and social events.
“I’m a straight shooter and I don’t agree with everything he has done,” he said.
“I think people are entitled to a second chance.”
