At 11am, at libraries, schools, bookshops, hospitals and homes across the country, children will read the same book, at the same time.
This year’s title is The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson, illustrated by Laura Wood and published by Scholastic Australia.
Warrnambool children’s services library officer Julie Struth will read aloud from the Civic Green stage.
“We participate every year,” Ms Struth said. “The event encourages children to read and enjoy books. It’s a great way to promote reading to children, literacy and library services.”
Ms Struth encouraged families to come down and enjoy the day’s free activities on the green, run by Warrnambool City Council Children’s Services team and the Active Hub. There will be fresh fruit and prizes drawn for those who register online.
It is a tale of friendship which encourages children if at first they don't succeed, to try, try again. It also pays homage to the famous, recognisable nursery rhyme.
Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) co-ordinates the national event. Chief Sue McKerracher said participants would “have a wonderful time with this story as the cow gazes at the moon and makes many attempts at that high flying leap over it.”
"The book inspires children because it tells a tale of never giving up, practicing a difficult skill and, without giving too much away, finally succeeding - with a little help from your friends,” Ms McKerracher said.
In the event of inclement weather storytime will be moved to the Lighthouse Theatre.
