The Great South West Coast Network of Government Schools is a new entity that has been created through a merge of the Warrnambool Network and Corangamite Network. It consists of all local government schools and gained formal status due to recognition of the common needs and issues of educational provision in areas served by each school.
“Schools are conscious of their community importance and regularly undertake learning activities with a community focus,” said Network Chairperson and Warrnambool Primary School Principal, Peter Auchettl. “The schools remain an integral part of their local community. Students are able to be acknowledged as individuals, and there are opportunities for students and staff to develop positive and healthy relationships that can lead to improved student learning.”
“Importantly, opportunities for school communities to build strong relationships between parents, students and staff are valued, so that there is recognition that education is a partnership. The aim of this partnership is to provide the best opportunities for students to achieve success in academic, social, cultural and sporting endeavours.”

In addition to an increase in the number of schools in the Network, a Community of Practice (CoP) approach will drive efforts to improve student outcomes across the area. The CoP approach is designed to increase collaboration and reduce isolation between schools and the adults that work in them through a focus on community (how we work together), professional practice (how we learn together), professional knowledge (what we learn together), and professional ethic (why we learn together).
Senior Education and Improvement Leaders, Lindy Sharp and Tony Fowler have been charged with the responsibility of working with the new Network in ensuring improved student outcomes. “The establishment of the Great South West Coast Network of Government Schools has been a tremendous step forward in establishing a vibrant and cohesive forum, with a clear focus on current educational issues,” Lindy said. “Tony and I have been impressed in the manner in which the new entity has quickly but thoroughly created a collaborative sense of purpose, with clear goals and targets.”
Next week is Education Week, an occasion where all government schools acknowledge the importance of education and the opportunities they provide. Throughout the week, schools will celebrate in different ways, with some schools inviting parents to participate in daily activities and others directing a specific focus for a year level or levels. Families are encouraged to contact their school and become involved in this celebration of excellence in education.
