May 19: Toni Erdmann
This German comedy is about a goofy dad trying to reconnect with his busy businesswoman daughter. Winner of numerous film awards, it was nominated for best foreign language film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
May 23: Witness For The Prosecution
The film group’s classic matinee of the month is this 1957 courtroom drama based on an Agatha Christie novel, directed by the legendary Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, The Apartment) and starring Tyrone Power (in his final screen role), Marlene Dietrich, and Charles Laughton.
May 30: Hidden Figures
This incredible tale of three female African-American NASA mathematicians is based on the real life experiences of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson, who are portrayed by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. The Oscar-nominated film is screening as a fundraiser for the Port Fairy Red Cross
June 9: La La Land
This hugely popular musical, which almost won the best film Oscar earlier this year, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a musician and an actress trying to follow their dreams in Los Angeles. It is screening as part of the Winter Weekends and will also be a fundraiser for the Port Fairy Heritage Boats.
June 16: Paterson
The most recent dramatic film from cult director Jim Jarmusch is the story of bus driving poet played by Adam Driver.
July 7: Jasper Jones
This powerful Aussie film examines racism, death and prejudice in a small country town, as seen through the eyes of a young boy. The award-winning film is being screened to coincide with Naidoc Week and the Port Fairy Winter Weekends.
July 8: Pawno
Another Aussie film screening as part of the Winter Weekends, this episodic ensemble drama centres around a Footscray pawnbroker and stars John Brumpton, Maeve Dermody, Damian Hill, Malcolm Kennard, Mark Coles Smith, Kerry Armstrong, Tony Rickards and Daniel Frederiksen.
July 8: Looking For Grace
Rahda Mitchell and Richard Roxburgh star in this Aussie drama about a couple who hire a private detective to find their daughter. Screening as part of the Winter Weekends.
July 21: The Founder
Michael Keaton’s comeback continues in this tale about greed, ambition and the birth of McDonald’s. Keaton stars as McDonald’s “founder” Ray Croc.
