Melbourne-based cousins Sergio and Bill Buccilli continued their run of from in Warrnambool, downing red-hot favourite Lightning Frank to claim the triumph.

The pair previously owned 2014 Warrnambool Cup winner Black Magic Opal.

On Wednesday night, they watched his son, Bewildering, take out another group contest in the south-west in a near-track record time of 24.74 seconds.

“That feeling of seeing him run down the straight … nothing will top that,” Bill said after the feat.

“Being involved in greyhound racing is very similar to business. When things are going well, particularly in breeding, everybody is up and about.

“But when things get slower and the market tightens, those who have been in the game a while know it will pick up again.

“That’s when you make your mark – it’s the same in greyhound racing.”

Sergio described the classic triumph as among the most “special” of the duo’s involvement in the sport.

“It’s exciting, because you really don’t know if you’re going to be involved in the race,” he said.

“You just load up with as many greyhounds as you can and hope that you’ve got the right dog at the right time.

“It’s a hard race to win, because the greyhounds are normally just starting out their careers.

“Lightning Frank, for example, was tough to beat because he’s had so much valuable experience in those big races.”

Lightning Frank, the most fancied south-west hopeful in the race, couldn’t overcome a slow start and was caught in heavy traffic.

The Mat Wright-trained chaser finished sixth overall.

Meanwhile, Woodford’s Jackson Bell came close to snaring a place in the prestigious race. His hopeful, Premier Zed, ran fifth.
