A SAMURAI sword, throwing stars and knives were among a stash of weapons uncovered by police at a Warrnambool garage sale.
A 42-year-old Warrnambool woman will be charged on summons with a number of offences and will appear at Warrnambool Magistrates Court on a date to be set.
Warrnambool policewoman Acting Senior Sergeant Tania Barbary said an amnesty on controlled weapons was in effect, so if the woman had handed the weapons in to police she would have avoided charges.
“This person didn’t realise she was doing the wrong thing ... but that’s part of the point of getting (the message) out there,” Acting Senior Sergeant Barbary said.
The amnesty runs from October 1 until November 30.
She said police were alerted to the sale of the illegal weapons by a member of the public.
“Obviously some people realise this is not on and we’re thankful for that.”
Acting Senior Sergeant Barbary said it was believed a small number of weapons had been sold at the garage sale last weekend prior to police intervention.
“We ask anyone who may have bought them to bring them forward and, with the amnesty on, they can hand them in, no questions asked,” she said.
The haul of weapons seized also included high-powered slingshots.
She said police would pay closer attention to weapons being sold through garage sales and urged anyone who sees any controlled items being sold in such a way to contact police.
Acting Senior Sergeant Barbary said 21 controlled weapons had been handed in during the first three weeks of the amnesty.
“The majority have been firearms, but there have also been machetes, swords and knives,” Acting Senior Sergeant Barbary said.
