The Magpies’ belief scored a major boost when they held on to defeat a North Warrnambool Eagles by a goal at Leura Oval, winning 45-44.
Camperdown coach Peter Finch said the game was neck-and-neck early before the Magpies built a slight lead through the second and third quarters and held a “six or seven” goal lead with five minutes to play, before a late surge from the Eagles.
“There were two or three turnovers late and they got back,” he said. “It was a pretty tight game. It was a good hit-out.
“We were just steady enough to hold on.
“Last year, we didn’t lose many of those close games.”
Goaler Jaymie Finch (23 goals) and defender Brooke Richardson were steady influences at both ends of the court, while 17 and under player Chelsea Baker was strong at wing attack.
