St Joseph’s priest Father John Fitzgerald said that Father Madden was born at Tower Hill in 1926 and attended the Catholic primary school at Illowa.
Father Madden worked as an accountant at the butter factory in Camperdown before becoming an ordained priest in 1963.
One of his first appointments was as an assistant priest at St Joseph’s in Warrnambool, Father Fitzgerald said.
He also served as Ballarat Diocese’s Vicar General from 1971 to 1976 and returned to the south-west in the late 1990s as the parish priest at Penshurst before he retired to Koroit in September 2011.
A funeral mass will be held at Koroit’s Infant Jesus Catholic Church on Thursday at 10:30am.
