Fr John Fitzgerald addressed a packed church at St Joseph’s Catholic Church for the 10.30am Sunday mass.
The church was so full that about a dozen people were left standing in the adjoining gathering space.
While in Warrnambool it was a traditional address, Pope Francis, presiding at a Good Friday service, asked God for forgiveness for scandals in the Catholic Church.
In what appeared to be a reference to sexual abuse, he spoke of "shame for all the times that we bishops, priests, brothers and nuns scandalized and wounded your body, the church."
The Catholic Church is struggling with the the scandal of sexual abuse of children by clergy.
