The driver, Keith William McPherson, initially faced charges including careless driving and failing to stop and give way.
However, the only charges upheld related to his failure to wear a seat belt and fill out his log book correctly.
Mr McPherson escaped serious injury in last year’s collision, which took place about 3.40pm on Wednesday, July 13 and resulted in several train carriages derailing.
Close to 20 train passengers were injured in the crash, and at the time Colac police sergeant Shane Howard said everyone involved was lucky to be alive.
The level crossing where the collision occurred only featured a stop sign and had been earmarked for upgrade. The crossing was upgraded in August last year, weeks after the crash.
Mr McPherson was fined $640 with $79.50 in statutory costs in relation to failing to fill out his log book correctly.
