Coach Tim Rantall said the boys were disappointed after a tough first day – which saw them win one game and lose two – saw them miss the cut for division one, but they made the most of their opportunities from that point to take out the division two title.
“It was a good result in the end,” he said. “We ended up making it a good outcome.
“On day two we won all three (games) and then Monday was finals.”
A comfortable 46-point win in the quarter final was a relief for the Seahawks, who were able to rotate their players with just a one-hour break before their semi-final against Wonthaggi.
Rantall said the Seahawks had to work hard to combat Wonthaggi’s great control of the ball, but they were able to meet the challenge and prevailed by about 10 points, setting up a grand final showdown against Bendigo.
The Bendigo outfit quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and while the Seahawks were able to level the score, they spent most of the game trailing, before going on to win 46-41.
“A couple of times we got to about six points down,” Rantall said. “We were probably only in front the last four or five minutes of the second half. Bendigo go themselves into foul trouble … (and) we shot really well from the foul line the last 10 minutes.”
Warrnambool’s under 12 girls also put in a strong showing in division two of their competition, making it as far as the qualifying final.
