The Port Campbell resident is using retirement to keep as fit as he can, a mantra which helped him win seven medals at the World Firefighters’ Games.
Silcock-Delaney, a member of the Cobden Fire Brigade, won two gold, four silver and one bronze medal in athletics events at the annual Games in Sydney.
“I officially retired 10 years ago,” he said yesterday. “I was involved in Landy Field athletics (at Geelong), I’m a life member of St Joseph’s Athletics Club and I’m a member of the Victorian Masters’ Athletics Club. I told my family I’d given it away but I think if you love doing something, keep going.”
Silcock-Delaney described himself as “a golden oldie”. He was a member of the Geelong West Fire Brigade for 35 years before shifting to the south-west and joining the Cobden Fire Brigade.
He will head to Pan Pacific Masters’ Games on the Gold Coast this weekend hoping to add to his medal tally. It will be his first Masters in 10 years.
