The Metropolitan Fire Brigade and the Country Fire Authority firefighters arrived at the house in Warrandyte Road, Ringwood, to find the man and woman in shock and holding their pet snakes as their home burned.

Several neighbours alerted firefighters with one saying they had heard a "loud bang" when they saw the smoke.

MFB Commander Bob Lanigan said the couple had enclosures for the pythons but when firefighters arrived they were standing outside with the snakes on their shoulders and in shock.

"The couple had a good fire escape plan and grabbed their loved ones and left," Commander Lanigan said.

Paramedics treated the man and woman for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.

Firefighters used "aggressive firefighting tactics" to attack the blaze, an MFB statement said, and managed to contain the fire to three rooms at the rear of the house.

A ventilation fan at the property also helped to clear the smoke from the building.

It took 22 firefighters 23 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Investigators are now looking to find the cause of the fire.

Warrandyte Road was closed from Loughnan Road to the Ringwood Bypass in both directions as a result of the fire.
