As the rest of the country cools down for the winter, things are heating up in the Northern Territory this June.
From sporting events to festivals of food, music and art, June is the perfect time to escape the chill and get involved in some of the best days out the Northern Territory has to offer.
Here is a roundup of what’s happening in June.
CrownBet Darwin Triple Crown Supercars
Whether you’re a revhead looking for some thrilling action or interested in a fun day out with family or friends, a day (or weekend) spent at the supercars is a unique experience.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Darwin Supercars, and with three action-packed days spread across 16-18 June, the event promises to be a huge celebration.
There’ll be musical performances from Australian hip hop act Illy, aeronautical displays by the Australian Defence Force, Hot Wheel Stuntz Inc car demonstrations and lots more.
Tickets start at $25 for Friday’s admission or $90 for the three days.
Alice Springs Beanie Festival
It began 20 years ago as a humble beanie party, organised to celebrate the artistic creativity of aboriginal women in remote communities.
These days, the Alice Springs Beanie Festival is a community-wide celebration of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists with a variety of workshops running across the 8-day festival.
Budding artists, families or seasoned professionals can head along to workshops which include resin art, screen printing, leatherwork, jewellery making and plenty of beanie-making.
A full festival program and costs are available on their website.
Barunga Festival
One of Australia’s longest-running regional festivals, the 32nd Annual Barunga Festival will take place across the Queen’s birthday long weekend, 9-11 June.
The festival has a long and proud tradition of celebrating remote indigenous Australia, with a 4000-strong audience typically pouring into the small Barunga community, located southeast of Katherine.
The long weekend has a jam-packed program of music, sport, culture, art, dance, circus, kids activities, workshops, spear-throwing, didgeridoo playing, food and many more festive treats.
The festival has a long legacy of showcasing the Katherine region and supporting remote indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.
Visitors of all ages are encouraged to join in the festivities with tickets available online.
Adelaide River Races
The Adelaide River Races are an exciting day of live horseracing on the Territory’s only turf track.
Now in its 55th year, the races are set within the beautiful shady grounds of Adelaide River, offering outback racing at its most picturesque.
The day boasts a seven-race program with TAB facilities onsite for those feeling lucky, plenty of food stalls and champagne flowing from one of the fully licensed bars.
Ladies are encouraged to put their best heel forward in the annual fashion on the field competition, with plenty of prizes on offer for best dressed.
Once the dust has settled on the track, the evening’s celebrations come alive with live entertainment by Darwin band The Fame Junkies.
Tickets are $25 for general admission and available online.
Greek Glenti
Darwin’s significant Greek community come out to play at the vibrant Greek Glenti Festival in 2017.
Held at Bicentennial Park across the long weekend (10-11 June), the festival will be bursting with the best of Greek culture, including Greek food, wine, dance and music.
There’ll be lots to keep the kids busy, including stalls, amusement rides, and local and interstate entertainment across the weekend.
The festival is held at Bicentennial Park overlooking the stunning esplanade and ocean beyond in Darwin and entry is free.
