The Warrong drag racer will be racing in the super street class at the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) national championships grand final at Adelaide International Raceway.
He and Tony Frost – the latter on a modified bike – will fly the flag for Warrnambool this Friday and Saturday.
For King, the Adelaide track and the national series are familiar territory, but he is searching for a career-best performance.
“As far as I’ve got is quarter-finals,” he said.
“I’m confident without being cocky it’ll be good. If I can at least make the quarter final, I’ll be happy, but I’d rather go all the way.”
King has enjoyed good form this season, and on his home track at Warrnambool, he took out the quick 16 two meetings ago and made the semi-finals at the club’s season-ender.
He will face a stern test at the grand final, however, where he will be competing in a field of more than 30 drivers.
The grand final itself has drawn a bumper field, with 221 teams expected across all categories.
Frost is looking forward to again testing his new bike, which he debuted this season, against the best in the sport.
“We’re just using this one as a test session again,” he said. “We’ve just debuted it this season and the expectation is just to do a personal best again.”
Earlier this season, Frost ran 8.05 seconds on the bike at 159mph – a personal best on both fronts.
“We hope to break the eight-second mark this weekend, (but) we aren’t 100 per cent confident,” he said.
Frost said he was working towards a time in the seven-second range to compete with the class’ heavy-hitters.
“It’ll be a good weekend, hopefully. You never know – hopefully we’ll end up on the podium on Saturday night,” he said.
