Norm Gibson, who has spent his time at Grassmere and Wangoom cricket clubs since crossing from the Warrnambool and District association in 1999, said the recognition was taking “quite a while to sink in”.
“It does mean the world to me,” he said.
“It’s very surprising and something I didn’t even think about.”
Gibson, who has played more than 100 games at Wangoom, has pushed on strongly after a knee replacement two years ago, and was part of the club’s C grade grand final team last weekend.
He had been involved in country week cricket across both the GCA and WDCA for about 20 years, and just recently announced he was stepping down from the role of team manager, and has also served as an umpire and held executive positions at club and league level.
Meanwhile, Killarney all-rounder Liam Cole was thrilled to win his second A grade cricketer of the year award and first outright.
The 2016-17 grand final man of the match shared the award with Panmure duo Paddy Mahony and Chris Bant 12 months ago.
"It's a little bit nicer," Cole said of winning outright after beating Purnim skipper Tom Smith by a vote on Friday night.
"It's absolutely sensational. To win individual awards is good but it's team first. For the club to bring home three premierships (last week) was a phenomenal effort.”
