City centre renewal project manager Ben Storey said a temporary repair had been made to the gas pipe and a permanent fix would be completed on Monday.
Police kept traffic away from Liebig Street, between Lava and Koroit streets, for about an hour, after the gas leak occurred at 12.30pm.
Shopkeepers at the southern end of the street stayed inside their businesses while repairs were completed.
EARLIER: A GAS line has been struck in Warrnambool’s Liebig Street, where the central business district city renewal works are underway.
The street has a strong gas smell.
A construction worker confirmed a gas line had been hit.
CFA and police are at the scene of the incident.
