The two-day seminar begins on March 30 at the City Memorial Bowls Club and continues with two sessions at the Lighthouse Theatre on March 31.
The South West Disability Network is hosting the sessions for professionals in the field, carers and families.
South West Disability Network disability strategic planner Janet Collins said it was a coup for the region to host Professor Attwood.
“With an increasing number of people being diagnosed with autism, the South West Disability Network is pleased to bring an internationally-renowned speaker to our local area.
“Parents, carers and professionals will have access to the latest information around living and working with children and adults with autism,” Ms Collins said.
The keynote presentation will focus on managing challenging behaviour in children, adolescents and adults with Autism. Professor Attwood will outline strategies to deal with repetitive behaviour and emotion management.
The use of cognitive behaviour therapy for children with severe autism will be discussed and the presentation will include strategies for helping with self-injury behaviour, improving social understanding and coping with change.
Professor Attwood’s presentation on the first evening of the seminar will cover the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. Aimed at professionals, this presentation will include a protocol to use in a diagnostic assessment.
At the first Lighthouse Theatre session Professor Attwood will outline strategies to improve attention, organisational skills and academic achievement.
The presentation also includes the latest theories on the origins of Asperger's Syndrome and Autism.
Professor Attwood is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in autism spectrum disorders for more than 40 years. His book Asperger’s Syndrome – A Guide for Parents and Professionals has sold more than 350,000 copies and has been translated into over 25 languages.
His subsequent book, The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome, is one of the primary textbooks on Asperger’s syndrome. He has been a keynote speaker at many Australasian and International conferences.
