Lifesavers spotted the shark 20 metres behind the break in front of the patrol tower shortly before 2pm.
The shark was believed to be between 2.2 and 2.3 metres long.
“It could be seen from the patrol tower,” Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club president Michael Owen said.
The beach will be closed for two hours before the situation is reassessed.
It is the second time the city’s beach has been closed this year after a sighting.
The reported sighting is listed on the Emergency Vic website.
