The 30-year-old, who played for St Kilda Sharks in the Victorian Women’s Football League, will step up her involvement with the Roosters’ team in the role of head coach, taking over from Daryl Fary and Michael Crutchfield, who guided the team through its formative year.
Fary has moved to Melbourne for work, while Crutchfield is staying on as an assistant coach.
“I threw my hat into the ring and the boys said, ‘Beautiful, that’ll work’,” Drew said.
“I’ve had my (coaching) ticket for the last two to three years and I’ve never been given the chance to do anything much with it.
“I probably know most of the girls – I’ve been working with some of these girls for four or five years now.”
Drew said South Warrnambool had been running player-driven training the past three weeks, but would now look to get a more formal structures in place with the AFL Western District Female Football League fast approaching.
The region’s inaugural youth girls competition is expected to have eight teams. Drew said it was likely there would be a couple more Warrnambool-based teams.
“I think we’ll have a couple of girls that played with us last year that might’ve moved to other clubs,” she said.
“We’re probably expecting to see a bit of movement, but we’ve got a lot of new girls coming in as well.”
