Eagles’ 2016 leading goalkicker Jarryd Lewis and 200-gamer Matthew Wines have been appointed co-captains, with Jordan Dillon, Adam Wines and Tom Batten rounding out the group.
Senior football co-coach Graeme Twaddle said the Lewis-Wines combination at the helm would hold the team in good stead this Hampden season.
“We hope they complement each other because we’ve got Jarryd, who is a really good speaker and motivator, and we’ve got Matthew who motivates people by his actions,” Twaddle said.
“He’s that type of bloke who’ll go out there and drag people along with doing what he’s doing. He leads by example.”
Wines is no stranger to leadership roles and was acting captain last season in Rory Taggert’s absence, while Lewis has risen to the top job in his first time in the leadership group.
Last season was a breakout year for the forward/midfielder, who kicked 51 goals.
Jordan Dillon has also been named in the leadership group for the first time.
Twaddle said the leadership group was voted in by its peers for meeting the key traits of respectful, disciplined, honest, approachable, positive and motivated.
“The were they traits our playing group came up with on our (training) camp,” he said. “All those players bring different strengths to the leadership group which complement each other.”
