The improvement of safety at the Back Larpent Road crossing, in Larpent, forms part of the state government’s recently announced $10 million in funding to upgrade 20 level crossings.
The level crossing improvements, due to be finished by the end of this year, will allow speed restrictions on the line to be lifted, reducing journey times.
Speed restrictions were introduced following a collision between a truck and a semi-trailer at Pirron Yallock in July last year.
Prior to the upgrade the Back Larpent Road crossing, which intercepts an unsealed road, contained only a stop sign.
Three other level crossings on the Warrnambool line have been upgraded under the state government’s Safer Country Crossings program, including Phalps Road at Pirron Yallock, Flaxmill Road at Colac and Sandys Lane in Gnotuk.
“The fourth upgraded crossing will make the Warrnambool line safer for all passengers and the local community,” Western Victoria MP Gayle Tierney said.
Seven of the 20 crossings have been fast-tracked to be completed sooner.
