Dr Silsat first came to Warrnambool in 1989 as part of a cultural exchange program with his university, Khon Kaen, and Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education.
At that time he stayed with highly regarded Warrnambool educator Dr Pat Varley.
Since then he has visited the city twice.
His artwork has been exhibited internationally and he currently has an exhibition in Canberra.
“He is one of the many links we made with Khon Kaen University in Thailand in the days of Warrnambool Institute,” Dr Varley said.
“He has had a long association with the city.”
He visited South West Victorian SEAL and conducted an art class with Heather Wanganeen, who is working on an art project with a small group of students in the Reconnect program.
The program caters for students who have disengaged with education and aims to build their self-confidence.
Dr Silsat used to sneak off to the art classes during his time in the city, even though he was supposed to be lecturing in education.
Dr Silsat said Warrnambool had changed a lot from his first visit.
He said the country had beautiful scenery and noted the Warrnambool Art Gallery was a huge benefit to the people of Warrnambool.
His exhibition at the Canberra Grammar School gallery opened on February 11 and is in conjunction with jeweller Gill Lumsden.
