David Miller, 30, of Drummond Street, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to theft of a car, reckless conduct endangering life, willful damage and carrying a controlled weapon.
He offended three weeks after being released from jail over an alcohol and ice-fuelled rampage which included a car-jacking in Warrnambool.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose jailed Miller for one year and he has already served 114 days in custody.
But he owes three months on parole in Queensland for theft of a car and on release from prison in Victoria is expected to be extradited to Queensland to serve that sentence.
Police said that in late September 2015 Miller stole a red Holden Commodore from a home.
Residents woke up to see the car being driven off.
The owner got in another car to search for his stolen vehicle and saw it driven from Carolyn Crescent into Suzanne Crescent.
A man wearing a light-coloured top dumped the car and fled.
When he was approached by police officers in his home he denied the offending but soon after jumped in the stolen car and drove off without the headlights operating.
Miller then drove at police in a divisional van who had to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
Miller soon after crashed into a fence alongside Morriss Road.
He was found in bushes nearby still wearing the light-coloured top but said he had been asleep in the bushes and knew nothing about the offending.
A blue knife was found in a pocket.
During an interview with police Miller picked up the chair he was sitting on and smashed off the legs.
He has an extensive criminal record and served a number of jail sentences.
