Warrnambool Bowls Club hosted 60 children from Warrnambool, Our Lady Help of Christians and St Joseph’s primary school.
Grade six student Eliza Hoffman said her team improved throughout the competition.
“Trying to dodge everyone else’s bowls and not not hit them closer to the jack (was difficult),” she said.
Her Warrnambool Primary School classmate Hayley Stephens agreed, saying adjusting to the bias was a major hurdle.
“Trying not to get it in the gutter is one of the harder parts,” she said.
Bowls Victoria participation co-ordinator Sean O’Kane said involvement at school level was the perfect way to boost interest.
“It’s through School Sport Victoria and previously it was only done in the metro parts of Melbourne and now we’ve opened it up statewide and kids from Warrnambool, Ballarat and Ararat have the chance to make the state final and play against other kids,” he said.
“I think (Warrnambool’s) Paul (O’Donnell) did some stuff previously with juniors but hopefully this ramps it up again.”
