It’s the only New South Wales venue for his fleeting Australian tour with expectations to draw around 15,000 fans.
It will be the first time the superstar performs in the region.
“My band and I are really looking forward to playing [in Australia] again in September and this tour will be even more memorable because it will be the first time I have ever played in Wollongong,” Sir Elton said.
“If the audience in The Gong is anything like those at all of the other shows we have done in New South Wales over the years, everyone will surely be in for a wonderful night!”
Tickets for the September 24 open-air event will go on sale Tuesday, March 14.
The tour will feature iconic hits and classic album tracks from his five-decade career, including a selection of songs from his album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Since his career began, Sir Elton has played more than 4000 concerts in more than 80 countries, including 186 in Australia since first visiting our shores in 1971.
Promoter Michael Chugg said Sir Elton loved Australia and Australians.
"It's an ongoing affair," Mr Chugg said.
It’s the third out of four concerts of the tour to be announced, with two others to be staged in regional Queensland.
