AFL Western District is still seeking expressions of interests from clubs until the end of the month, but region manager Lachy Patterson said the early response was encouraging.
“Through the discussions we’ve had, we’d be very confident that in year one we’d have between six to nine teams,” he said.
South Warrnambool launched a female football team last year, and the proposed youth girls competition has drawn interest from across the district, including Horsham and Stawell.
Patterson stressed that there was “nothing locked in yet”, with interested clubs to discuss rules, fixtures and more for what could be a six-week season at a meeting in Hamilton next month.
He was mindful of avoiding a clash with netball commitments of any potential footballers.
