THE state government will be asked to set a compromise deal on Saturday afternoon trading in Warrnambool. The city’s council has thrown out a proposal to allow shops to open year-round on Saturday afternoons, but will allow extended trading during the existing Christmas holiday period to continue until the first weekend in May.

PLANS are afoot for a merger by three of Victoria’s biggest dairy co-operative companies. The proposed merger could bring together the interests of Victoria Butter Factories Co-operative, Western District Co-operative and Gippsland and Northern Co-operative. If accepted by shareholders, it would create a new company with an anticipated annual turnover of more than $100 million.
ASPECTS of the proposed ring road to connect harbour facilities with the highway have been referred to Portland Town Council officers for study.

100 YEARS AGO:
WHEN the Minister for Public Works visited Portland, representations were made to him urging that the government take steps to divert traffic to the port. It was pointed out that a large sum of money had been expended in making the port capable of catering for deep-sea vessels but that the port was not being used as it should be.
THE want of sufficient trucks to take away produce from the Illowa railway station has meant potatoes, onions and grain have accumulated and only occasional loads taken away.
