Warrnambool friends Di Sullivan, Marian McKenzie, Maida Gilbert and Carmel Hughes combined to win the annual stroke event on their home course to edge out Commonwealth.
Their 232 shots – their top three scores – was four better than the Commonwealth outfit, which featured south-west talent Jo Flaherty.
Flaherty won the A grade singles crown after firing 78.
The winning outfit, which was separated throughout the day’s play, celebrated their triumph with glasses of champagne in the Warrnambool clubrooms.
“Winners don’t cook, so we’re going out for dinner and a few drinks,” Hughes said.
They were among an 83-strong field.
“It is a great honour to win the Marj Robbie, there’s been some really good teams in the past that have won,” Gilbert said.
“We’re happy about that – just to get our photo in the book.”
Hughes agreed, highlighting the esteem the competition was held.
“We’ve had teams from all over Victoria compete today and we’re very proud to have kept the cup in our club,” she said.
“It was excitement and shock (to beat Commonwealth).
“Golf is a very challenging game that changes from day-to-day and today I happened to putt really well and it just helps your score tremendously when you happen to putt well.”
Sullivan said Commonwealth, which also included Wendy Swift, Anna Alston and Sue French, was a talented-laden side which was tough to overcome.
“It’s just amazing beating Commonwealth – we just think it’s the ant’s pants,” she said.
All four Warrnambool players have spent time on its committee and are regulars at the club.
“I am usually running the kitchen and I was lucky enough we had new people on the committee and those girls are just looking like they’re going to be wonderful,” McKenzie said.
“And they said ‘you go out and play’.”
Flaherty, who also plays at Warrnambool and Port Fairy, won the A grade singles crown from Donna Weller (86).
Alston (86) claimed the A grade handicap title from Liz Molesworth (87).
B grade scratch winner was Helen Holcombe from Dianne Johnson, while Sue Rea snared the handicap section with on a countback from McKenzie.
Hughes was the C grade scratch victor ahead of Helena Holman and Dawn Lay took out the handicap section from Beth Preston.
